The new GARDASIL 9 vaccine is now available at Katong Family Clinic, covering HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. It protects against the main cancer causing strains for Cervical cancer and also offers coverage for vulva, vaginal, anal and oro-pharyngeal (off label usage) cancers.

Cervical cancer is the 10th most common cancer in females (from Singapore Cancer Registry Interim Annual Report 2010 - 2014) and the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths for women aged 15-44 years in Singapore (from ICO HPV info centre, HPV and related diseases report, Singapore).

Compared to the earlier version Gardasil 4, it protects against additional high-risk strains of human papillomavirus and it reduces the risk of HPV-related cervical cancer by approximately 90%. It also protects against HPV-related vaginal, vulvar and anal cancers and genital warts to a similar degree.

It is indicated for males and females from 9-26 years - do vaccinate your children of suitable age!

Remember, completing the vaccine course reduces the risk of cervical cancer but it is still important for sexually active women to undergo regular cervical cancer screening!!!

Dear Celest,

GARDASIL 9 offers protection against additional strains of HPV when compared with the older GARDASIL vaccine (which covers 4 HPV subtypes: 6,11,16,18). GARDASIL 9 protects against the subtypes in GARDASIL plus types 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58.

This may be more important in our local context. Worldwide, HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancers and precancers with another 20% being associated with other high risk HPV subtypes. In Singapore, infection with HPV 16 and 18 is less common than elsewhere and infection with other high-risk HPV subtypes, especially types 51, 52 and 58 is more common. This means that vaccinating against the additional high risk HPV subtypes contained in GARDASIL 9 may offer more benefit locally.

Studies have shown that GARDASIL 9 after GARDASIL is safe and effective in generating an immune response. We would generally advise a one year gap after GARDASIL before having the first dose of GARDASIL 9.

Yes, studies show it is safe and effective. However it is advisable to have a gap of one year between the last dose of the GARDASIL Quadrivalent vaccine and the first dose of GARDASIL 9.

Dear Thida,

The ideal time for GARDASIL 9, and when it offers the most benefit is before a person becomes sexually active. However, a person older than 26 years can still receive the vaccine after a discussion of the risks and benefits in his or her particular case.

Generally the more partners a person has had the higher the likelihood that they have been exposed to more types of HPV but of course each person's personal risk differs.
